Portions of Rubin’s article are below.
An All-Star the last three years, Fuentes picked up his 10th save of the season Saturday night in Chicago, locking down the Rockies' 2-0 win and lowering his ERA to 2.28. He's making $5.05 million this year in his final season before free agency. A Mets official confirmed the interest, which was reported in the Denver Post.
(Obviously, if Fuentes is available, the Mets will be one of MANY teams showing interest. Lefty pitchers, with a pulse, who have inferior talent to Fuentes, usually attract mass interest. Fuentes has talent. At least a dozen teams should be interested. Fuentes being available in trade, is an old rumor. Prior rumors mentioned that the Rockies like Aaron Heilman, whose value is not at its peak. What would it take to get Fuentes, especially with numerous teams bidding for him ? Would acquiring the lefty Fuentes place Schoeneweis on the market, if you feel his value is at its highest, right now, you want to sell high, and replace him with a younger Fuentes ? How about Wagner ? He has a complete no-trade clause. He’s said he’s probably retiring after his contract ends, after the 2009 season. Would he accept a trade to a contender ? More teams would be interested in Wagner, than Fuentes. Let’s look at the big picture. Despite Wagner’s last few appearances, he is one of baseball’s best closers, and a potential Hall-of-Famer.)
