Mets Memories...1979 All-Star Game...

Mets Memories - 1979 All-Star Game

It’s hard to believe that game was almost 30 years ago. The game was played at Seattle’s Kingdome, the only All-Star game ever played there. The Mets, back then, weren’t very good, but we did have 2 players that went to the All-Star game, John Stearns and Lee Mazzilli.

Neither of them started. Well, with a lineup of, Davey Lopes, Dave Parker, Steve Garvey, Mike Schmidt, George Foster, Dave Winfield, Bob Boone and Larry Bowa, I’m not surprised.

The National League was down 6-5, going into the bottom of the 8th, when Mazz pinch-hit, and hit a home run, in his first all-star at bat. Gary Carter tagged out Brian Downing, trying to score, in the bottom of the 8th, so the National League had a chance to go ahead, in the top of the 9th.

Well, with the bases loaded, Mazz got up again, and walked, forcing in Joe Morgan, and the National League had its lead, which it would hold onto, in the bottom of the 9th, so, the National League won, 7-6. Mazz had 2 RBI's.

Dave Parker won the MVP of that game. He made some nice outfield assists, and drove in a run. Mazz should have won it. 1979 All-Star Box Score
