Mike Pelfrey was awesome, pitching 7 stellar (in the words of “our bro, Joe Beningo”) innings, to rest the bullpen, in anticipation of tonight’s series in Philadelphia, against the first place Phillies.
Pelfrey allowed only 1 earned run, and 6 hits, walking 2, and striking out 6 last night, lowering his ERA to 4.23, and improving his record to 6-6.
Scott Schoeneweis pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
Joe Smith pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
The bullpen is rested, thanks to Big Pelf.
Big Pelf has not lost since May 26th, seven starts ago.
In those last seven starts, Pelfrey is 4-0, with 3 no-decisions, and those 4 wins are in his last 4 starts. Pelfrey, surprisingly, has become the Mets most reliable pitcher, and at a relatively affordable cost.
(Hey Fred, Jeff, and Omar, are you reading this ? Build the farm system, and find the next young, affordable, Pelfrey, Wright, Reyes, etc.)
How about 44 and 2/3 innings, 45 hits, 15 earned runs, ZERO HOME RUNS ALLOWED, 19 walks, 31 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.02 ? These are Big Pelf’s stats in his last 7 starts. For all the times the Mets shuttled this kid back and forth between the majors and AAA, and for all the aggravation this kid has been through, because he was rushed way too quickly through the farm system, Pelfrey has earned this.
In a word, BRAVO !!!
In the attached photo, Mr. Pelfrey, is your well-earned standing ovation.
Take a bow, Big Pelf, you’ve earned it !!!
