The Mets just defeated the Phillies 4-2 in 12 innings. The Mets lead 2-0 with two out in the ninth when Billy Wagner gave up a game tying home run to Jayson Werth. I was saying to myself that "they can't beat this team. This is just a continuation of 2007."
The Mets proved me wrong. Fernando Tatis crushed a 2 run homer in the Mets half of the twelfth inning. Joe Smith, in his second inning of work, closed the door on the Cheese Steaks to get the win. Smith is now 1-1 with his 2.1 IP today.
The game was delayed 2 hours 50 minutes due to rain. Oliver Perez started the game and pitched well. He lasted seven innings, giving up only four hits and no runs while striking out six and walking two. The second consecutive impressive start for OP.
I thank the Mets for proving me wrong. If they return home having taken three of four from Philly, it will have been a solid road trip.
Some Notes:
David Wright was 1-6, striking out twice, and leaving two runners on.
Carlos Beltran was 3-6, a HR, and two RBI's. The second coming after DWright failed to score Reyes with one out.
Jose Reyes was 3-6 and scored a run.
The Mets turned a potentially ugly night into a night to remember. For a complete breakdown of tonight's game, go to the Box Score.
