Wednesday afternoon, Mets CEO Fred Wilpon, GM Omar Minaya, Manager Jerry Manuel and about 15 Mets players visited Walter Reed Hospital.
The players and patients gathered for a noontime cookout, complete with hot dogs. Not all of the veterans were baseball fans, but some were.
David Wright remarked that he was more in awe of these soldiers than they were of the professional baseball players. Wright relayed that this is close to him because of some high school friends that joined the military and his father is a police officer in Virginia. Wright went on to say how appreciative he is of the men and women who dedicate their lives to the service.
Jerry Manuel said that visiting these injured soldiers really put into perspective on how they give their lives for our country. "Every time you watch the news -- you watch what's happening over there -- you really can relate how real it is," Manuel said. "It'll stay with me for a lifetime."
