Aug 8,2006: The Mets were in the home stretch of a great summer leading to a pennant. They were home that day playing the Padres. In the visitors dugout was Mike Piazza waiting to play his first game at Shea since he wasn’t signed by the Mets in the previous winter and signed a deal with the Padres.
This was the guy who made a difference the minute the Mets had traded for him back in 1998. He was the one who brought New York back to baseball the first game after Sept 11, 2001.
He walked up to the plate back in 2006 to a 5 minute standing ovation. It was memorable. So were his 2 home runs that day and almost missing a 3rd that just died at the warning track.

The Mets should retire his number while Shea is still being used. This is where he played.
