Former Marlin (and Met) Jeff Conine is set to compete in Hawaii's Ford Iron Man WorldChampionship. The Iron Man World Championship is a triathlon, where athletes are to compete in a 2.4-mile swim, followed by biking 112 miles, and winding up with a 26.2-mile marathon.
Conine, who is know as “Mr. Marlin”, had a 17 year professional baseball career, where he was a part of two World Series Championship teams with the 1997 and the 2003 Marlins. Conine “finished” his career last year with the Mets (2007). He did wind up signing a one day contract with Florida, so that he could retire a Marlin.
Competing for charity, Conine has been granted an exemption. Conine is raising money for for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Fla. Conine's close friend, Howard Zimmerman, who passed away from cancer last November, helped Jeff found the Conine All-Star Classic Golf Tournament, a charity event that assists the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.
