Today Danielle Sessa - Bloomberg reported that Jeff Wilpon, COO of the Mets, said he defends Citigroup for not bailing on the $20M annually (for the next 20 years) they agree to pay the Mets for naming rights to Gil Hodges Memorial Park, er Citi Field - the Mets new digs starting in April '09.
Wilpon is quoted as saying, "It’s good business for both of us to have the partnership and a relationship,” Jeff Wilpon told reporters after a tour the new stadium in Flushing, New York. “I understand that there is some upsetness in the marketplace, but we don’t agree with it.”
More sage words from Wilpon: “There are other banks in the same situation with naming rights deals also,” he said.
Yes Jeff, but I'm sure the naming rights were already established before laying off 50,000+ employees.
