Johan Not Starting Until March 3rd

The Mets are indicating that Johan Santana won’t make his first Spring Training start until March 3. The start will be against the St. Louis Cardinals, and will come a full week after the Mets spring training games commence.

Citing Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen, the delay is not related to Santana’s knee surgery in the fall, but due more in fact to the 37 Spring Training games, which Warthen feels is too long for his starters. The pitching coach doesn’t believe that his starters need 7 starts in the spring. As we know, the lengthened Spring Training is due to this year’s World Baseball Classic.

Before facing the Cards, Santana is to have two simulated games to keep in shape. He is still expected to be the Mets starting pitcher when the 2009 season starts in Cincinnati on April 6th.
