Maine Encouraged After Lousy Start

John Maine was pleased. John Maine feels encouraged after today's outing. John Maine, to continue to feel this good, should avoid viewing his pitching line: 5 R – 5H – 2HR – 3IP.

Maine's take on his performance: "It is frustrating -- just the results -- but I felt good out there. I wasn't throwing the ball all over the place. If I was missing, I was barely missing. I threw the ball well. It could have just as easily been 0-0 as 5-0 and that happens. But I felt fine throwing."

I try not to get too wrapped up in Spring Training results, but what concerns me is that Maine spent last season tossing 100 pitches in four innings – before having shoulder surgery to remove bone spurs from his pitching shoulder. When he has a spring like he has so far, 10.80 ERA, it will raise concerns among the Flushing Faithful.

I think Maine will be fine over the long haul, but he might have difficulty for a portion of this season until he works himself back into shape. As fans we are going to have to be patient, but that will be quite difficult because the Mets not only need Maine, they need the John Maine of 2007 to help eradicate the failures of the last two seasons.
