Jerry's Mets Assessment

This afternoon, Jerry Manuel was in his weekly segment with Mike Francesa on WFAN. Some of the subjects addressed were:

  • On his quick hook of Santana last night: Santana didn't have his best stuff, and liked the the match-up with Pedro Feliciano. He wasn't confident of Santana facing the upcoming middle of the Atlanta batting order.

  • Carlos DelGado: his injured hip will be evaluated in San Francisco, and hopes to have a decision - DL or not, by Friday or Saturday. DelGado has received a cortisone shot, but thus far hasn't helped. Jerry admitted DelGado's prognosis doesn't look good, and might be on DL. Murphy will be used at 1B if DelGado is DL'd, and Manuel believes Murph is better at 1B than LF. Could Murphy be the 1B of the future? DelGado's contract is up at the end of the year, and DelGado will be 37 in June. Tatis will be used to fill in in the OF and at 1B. Manuel loves what Tatis brings to the club with his attitude and bat.

  • On Ryan Church: Church is not in chateaus bow-wow; Jerry said he needs Ryan Church, but wants to see more of Reed, especially with Church slumping. Manuel admitted that Church has the most potential, and expects more from him.

  • Omir Santos: Manuel has been impressed with the tremendous potential he has shown. He has shown much more than he had anticipated. He doesn't want to evaluate Santos now. He likes to evaluate players when they aren't doing well. Jerry will reserve the right to say he is 'the guy' at this point.

  • Bobby Parnell: Is better than he thought. He likes what the kid has shown.

  • On his team thus far: has been real disappointed with his defense, especially the interior defense. He thought they would be much better coming out of Spring Training. He thinks it might be a learning curve, getting used to the new surface of Gil Hodges Memorial Park.

Mets need someone who can play 1B that's not named Tatis. Nothing much against him, but seeing Wright bounce throws to first all night long (you notice those things sitting high up behind 1B), we need someone who can cover up those mistakes like Delgado can. And, we need Tatis or someone to be able to spell Wright at third once a week so he can strike out in a clutch pinch hitting situation.

Jerry said if DelGado is DL'd, Murphy would get reps at 1B, and that Murph is better at 1B than LF.
