Beltran Foolishly Looking To Return

Mets injured CF, Carlos Beltran, is still looking to return to the Mets in about two weeks. The Mets would be negligent to allow Beltran to return this year.

Beltran, who has been disabled since June with a deep bone bruise on his knee, is believed to be in need of microfracture surgery this off season. If he has the surgery, he will surely miss most, if not all of the 2010 season. Those who have had this procedure have found that the results, although positive, diminish the agility and quickness a player had prior to the injury/surgery.

With this season all but over, what possibly could the Mets or Beltran gain by returning him to action? The answer is NOTHING! The risk is great though. If he injures himself more, he might jeopardize the remainder of his career.

Beltran is in year five of a seven year deal, and by trotting him out to CF every day - bulky knee brace and all, they would show complete disregard for not only their fans, but for the health of their player(s) and their careers.

No one should ever question Carlos' desire to play. He has played frequently through painful injuries, mainly to his knees. He has never complained. He has been a real trouper, and a solid citizen for not only the Mets organization, but for Major League Baseball.

That being said, the Mets must exert their authority, and prevent Beltran from returning in 2009. The risk far exceeds the gains, and for what? To finish 12 games out of the play-offs rather than 15 games out of the play-offs?
