Beltran On The Fan

This morning Carlos Beltran stopped by and spoke to Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on WFAN. As always, Beltran was a complete gentleman, and showed nothing but class throughout the interview.

Some interesting points covered:

How Is His Knee Progressing: Beltran informed the listeners that he has been training in Puerto Rico, and is much better now than he was at the end of last season.

How Frustrating Was 2009? Was frustrating due to all the injuries. “Last year for us was real bad.”

How Confident Is He In The Mets Chances In 2010? “…I think we have the talent to compete… we still have the talent to win the division.”

Is He Happy Being A Met? He is very happy being a Met. When asked if he wants to play anywhere else, Beltran said, “Not really.”

Pressure Of Playing In NY: He loves the pressure. When he first arrived in 2005, “I wasn’t prepared” for the pressure. After his inaugural season, he was better prepared for handling the pressure, as his statistics prove out.

Jose Reyes’ Injury: Beltran spoke to Reyes two days ago. “He’s feeling great. Jose Reyes will be ready for next year.”

Pelfrey’s Histrionics On The Mound: Beltran admitted he makes fun of Pelf when he pitches, but added that he is a tough competitor who works very hard. Carton played the parody I Wanna Lick My Hand and Beltran asked if he could get a copy to play for the club. “I like it. Give me a copy and I will play it for the club.”

Which Season Was Most Frustrating? “All frustrating.” No one more frustrating than the other (2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009).

Beltran provided information on his baseball academy, called The Carlos Beltran Foundation. We wrote about this great foundation, which is a school where kids will get not only academic training, but top notch training on the athletic field (24 Hours...March 26, 2009). Beltran donates a large portion of his salary to this foundation. To date, he has personally donated over $2M of his own money: His reason for doing so – “I need to give back to the community.” On November 21, 2009 he will be having a fund raiser to raise money for his academy. For more on this, visit the Carlos Beltran Web Site . Kids can receive scholarships to attend universities in the United States. The school also helps kids with their English. Beltran recounted that he didn’t speak a word of English when he signed his first professional contract at 18.
