Expected Possible Mets Catcher Now Off List

The Cleveland Indians traded catcher Kelly Shoppach to the Tampa Bay Rays for players to be named. After a solid 2008 season (21 home runs), Shoppach had a dramatic decline in 2009 (.214 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 89 games).

Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro admitted that money played a role in this deal. Shoppach earned $1.95M last season, and is still arbitration eligible, where he could possibly be awarded a $3M salary.

Shoppach’s name had come up a few times as a possible Mets catcher for 2010. Shoppach has been regarded as a solid defensive catcher. Originally drafted by Boston, he was traded to the Indians after the 2005 season.
