As reported in Rotoworld , the Mets have been monitoring the status of Carlos Delgado closely. They are not impressed with his progress. The Mets might be getting ready to close the Carlos Delgado chapter in NY.
I have not wanted Delgado since the conclusion of '08. I thought last year when the Mets picked up his option during the off-season, that they should have traded him right then and there. Well, the Mets didn't, and they were hurting badly in '09.
Fast forward to 2010, and with Carlos Beltran out for some time after having knee surgery, the need for a HEALTHY big bat is more important than ever, and Delgado no longer fills that need.
Hank Blalock, although a lefty hitter, is still available on the free agent market. LaRoche is gone, so what might have seemed like a viable option no longer exists.
I like Murphy, and I think with more seasoning he will be good, but as an everyday player at this point is asking a lot. Time for Omar, or Ricco, or Jeffy for that matter to start working the phones, or we might see a not-ready-for-primetime youngster, Ike Davis, be promoted before he is ready.
