While perusing the internet, I was researching some information on The Ultimate Mets Database when I learned that Sammy Drake, who played briefly for the Mets in 1962, had passed away on January 27th this year.
Many may not know much, or anything about Sammy Drake. Truth be told, I didn’t either until November 14th, 2008. I had found an article about Mr. Drake, and a young boy he befriended at a military base back in the 1950’s. If you haven’t read the post, I encourage you to do so.
Drake had started up a baseball team on the base, and the young boy, C. Wayne Mitchell, was a bat boy. He and Drake developed a relationship over the ensuing months, where they would talk baseball, have catches, etc. Mitchell’s father, and military lifer, was re-assigned, and the boy and Drake’s relationship came to an end.
Fast forward close to fifty years later, and the men were re-united at an autograph signing where Drake was present. The two men were re-introduced, and they had a wonderful time catching up.
Mr. Mitchell was kind enough to leave a comment on our post, and strangely, after learning of Drakes death, I can’t help but send my condolences out to not only Mr. Drake’s family, but to Mr. Mitchell also.
Sammy Drake was acquired by the Mets from the Chicago Cubs on October 10, 1961. He had the “proverbial” Cup ‘O’ Coffee with the Mets in 1962, and retired after the season. He encountered racism throughout his life, but was always a gentleman (from all reports).
I am sad to say I didn’t learn Drakes passing back in January, or I would have given the event it’s proper space on our blog site.
So, when you next say a prayer or lift a glass, be sure to remember Sammy Drake, an original NY Met.
