Mets flashback 1967-yearbook

Met fans are worried about the 2010 season before it has even started so I thought it be a nice change of pace to offer a look at something other then the present day Mets.

As a Met fan besides rooting for the team if your like me there are things that you collect that are Met related. Everyone has there thing. Some collect cards, maybe you collect Jerseys or all the promotional giveaways. If anyone goes to opening day and wants to donate there Met apple look me up!

Well I have always had a thing for yearbooks. Now I am not like my colleague here who has every Met yearbook I think from 1974, but I prefer the older ones from the 60’s. Of course some of you might consider the 70’s ancient as it is. Well thanks for calling me old! Anyway in last 3 or so years I have found myself gravitating to Mets early history. This has drawn me to the year books from 1962-1970. Part of it is the art work that you really don’t see nowadays on yearbooks. Right now I still need the first 3 to round out my collection of the 60’s but I have just finally been able to secure the 1967 yearbook. This yearbook for some reason seems more scarce then the 62,63 years for reasons I am not sure of.

Well the ‘67 year to me just represents the start of the Mets climb up to the World Series in 1969. The Mets as a team didn’t do great. They won only 61 games that year. Two Stars of the next 10 years for the Mets had there first debuts in April of that year. Hall of Famer Tom Seaver and of course the Mets great lefty Jerry Koosman. The Mets also had Amos Otis who became a Royals stand out debuted that year as well as pitcher Danny Frisella and Ken Boswell. Boswell was the Met they overlooked last year in the ’69 Celebration.

Seaver and Koosman were destined from the start if you just look back to April of ‘67 for the simple fact that there debuts were on consecutive days. Seaver pitched against the Pirates at Shea on April 13th 1967 where he struck out 8 in 5 + innings while getting a no decision in the Mets 3-2 win. The next day the Mets were at Connie Mack Stadium playing the Phillies and Kooz pitched 2+ innings. Who knew what those 2 young electric pitchers would bring to the park everyday. Even when I started following them in 1974,75 Seaver and Koosman were still dominant pitchers that you wanted to see pitch even though those mid 70’s Mets teams were pretty awful. Kooz won 20 games back then on a horrible Met team.

As we get closer to opening day there is always optimism for the year ahead. Back in 1967 if you were old enough to watch these 2 great pitchers you knew that soon the Mets would rock in the National League.
