To make room for Jon Niese's return to the Mets rotation today, instead of sending someone like Andrew Brown down, the Mets chose to demote Jeremy Hefner.
Adam Rubin just tweeted that Hefner was demoted and will go to NY for medical attention for an issue with his elbow. Hefner says that the elbow is painful with inflammation. Let's hope Tommy John surgery isn't needed. Hefner had been lights out for about a month leading up to the All Star break, but since the break hasn't had the same success, throwing many pitches in too few innings. According to Rubin, Hefner believes that his problem might be the result of when he was hit by a Carlos Beltran line drive in Spring Training.
Niese returns from a labrum issue in his left (pitching) shoulder. Although Niese hasn't pitched much before being put back on the Mets roster, he says he feels much better.
Wilmer Flores has been playing solid ball since his first game last week, and is rewarded for his 8 RBI in 5 games by being moved to the fifth slot in Terry Collins' batting order today.
Here is today's Mets lineup:
1. Young - LF
2. Lagares - CF
3. Murphy - 2B
4. Davis - 1B
5. Flores - 3B
6. Baxter - RF
7. Recker - C
8. Quintanilla - SS
9. Niese - LSP
