Mets' starting catcher, Brian Schneider, was hit on his left hand, by a foul ball, in the first inning. Conditions worsened throughout the game, and eventually, he was removed from the game, after the seventh inning. Schneider was hospitalized after the game. X-rays taken on the fifth metacarpal of his left hand, came back negative.
The injury occurred to the same finger that injured him in April, when he suffered an infection in his left pinkie finger. Pending the results, he may need to be placed onto the disabled list. The Mets listed him as the dreaded "day-to-day" phrase that Church, Alou, and others have been described as, meaning he probably will not go onto the disabled list, and the Mets will play with a 24-man roster for 7-10 days, until he recovers, or the Mets finally place him onto the 15-day disabled list.
Currently, the Mets have 3 catchers on their 25-man roster. Schneider's backups are Ramon Castro (this afternoon's probable starter) and Robinson Cancel.
