“The Jacket”

Lou, a friend of ours, from Never Forget ’69, brings up a very interesting point. Rumors are flying that if Willie is fired, Rick Peterson may go also.

Rick Peterson came on board in 2003 when Art Howe took over the club. Willie Randolph never had a chance to pick his own pitching coach. And don’t look to Willie to say anything bad about Peterson. Willie toes the company line and would never publicly criticize one of his coaches.

This is not to say that Peterson is not without value. Maybe he should be a roving instructor in the minors since he’s so into the mechanics of pitching.

If Dan Warthen, respected pitching coach for Ken Oberkfell’s AAA New Orleans team, does replace Peterson, instead of firing Peterson, could we explain to him that the players need to hear a different voice, maybe Rick even needs a change of scenery, and would he roam the minor leagues, tutoring young, naïve kids who would be more apt to listen to Peterson, known for his work with Zito, Harden, Mulder, and the Mets’ pitchers ?

It’s potentially a great idea, that’s worth considering.
