Our friend, Steve Popper, of Amazin' Stories, from The Record, northjersey.com, tells a funny story, and a side of Billy Wagner we've seen before, his sense of humor. Steve writes...
One interesting side note to the Mets troubles revolves around the note that was never sent.
The Mets organization found itself frenzied to find that Billy Wagner penned an email to an assortment of recipients - Mets.com, SNY, fans, Mets officials - in which he apologized for his recent struggles, expressed his own frustration and asked for the fans and organization to stand patiently with him.
Except that he never wrote the note. It came from a freshly-created e-mail address and as Wagner pointed out, "I wish I could write that well."
Would you have loved to have been a fly on the wall, seeing the Mets organization running around frenzied, fully expecting that Wagner, known for his honesty, and not being afraid of anything, including speaking his mind, in damage control, trying to figure out how to react to this e-mail ? Priceless !!!
I always give David Wright and Billy Wagner credit. No matter what happens during a game, they're there for the media, and the fans, who want to hear feedback. And I respect Wagner's brutal honesty and sense of humor. Wagner's stated that he expects to retire after his contract expires in 2009. After he retires, I hope he's elected to the Hall of Fame five years later. Hopefully, he can achieve 50+ saves in the interim.
