Jose Valentin may have played his last game. He still hopes to play next season, but, told the Mets that mentally, trying to recover from injuries (leg fracture in July of ’07, partially torn ACL in right knee during off-season, pinched nerve in neck during spring training, right elbow soreness) is taking its toll.
Valentin signed a one-year Minor League contract with the Mets this January, and would need to recover, and sign a new contract, to continue playing.
Valentin was hitting .182 in 33 at-bats for (AAA) New Orleans after posting a .320 mark in 25 at-bats for (A) St. Lucie.
Last season, Valentin was helpful on and off the field for the Mets, as he had become a mentor and tutor for shortstop Jose Reyes. If his career is over, he could potentially be a wonderful coach for the Mets, as he has shown leadership skills, and a willingness to be a role model, mentor, and tutor to the younger Latin players. Valentin has mentioned a desire to become a coach, and manager.
Valentin did not announce his retirement, and will try to play winter ball, and try again for a comeback next spring.
