David Wright – All Star...
Anthony DiComo, of www.mlb.com, reports that David Wright is headed to the All-Star Game after all.
Hey now you're an All Star get your game on, go play…
Hey now you're a Rock Star get the show on get paid…
And all that glitters is gold…
Only shooting stars break the mold…
From “All Star” by the group, “Smash Mouth.”
Less than a day after losing out on the Final Vote to Corey Hart of the Brewers, Wright was named to the National League roster as a replacement for injured Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano.
Wright, who had made the All-Star Game as a starter in each of the previous two seasons, lost out to Chipper Jones in the initial fan voting for third basemen, then to Hart in the Final Vote contest to determine the last reserve on the roster.
But Soriano's injury created a need for one more player. Matt Holliday of the Rockies took Soriano's spot as a starting outfielder, and Wright moved in as a reserve.
"I don't want the three days off," Wright said Thursday. "I am sure that guys in here are looking forward to getting some time off to spend with the family, hang out, but when you get this close to being an All-Star and getting a chance to participate in New York, you want it."
Wright, batting .288 on the year, is leading the Mets with 17 homers and 70 RBIs.
He will join Mets closer Billy Wagner on the NL team.
Now, we Met fans have a reason to watch the game, other than waiting to see if Billy Wagner gets a chance to pitch. Imagine a tie game in the ninth, and Mariano Rivera is pitching for the AL, with Wagner pitching for the NL ? That could be interesting to see. And a Wright, pinch-hit homer, off Rivera, is the margin of victory ?
