Should The Mets Sign Richie Sexson ???

Yesterday, the Mariners released Richie Sexson. Sexson's .218 batting average was the lowest among qualifying players in the American League.

If you’re looking for a right-handed bat, and a very good defensive first baseman, to platoon with Carlos Delgado, Sexson can help. He will not cost much, the pro-rated major league minimum, for the rest of this season, as Seattle will pay the remainder of his contract.

However, Sexson has been away from the National League, during his tenure with Seattle, and may need time to adjust to the National League pitchers. The Mets are in a battle to try to win the NL East, and will not be patient. If they sign Sexson, they will want immediate results.

Also, Sexson plays only one position, first base, so the Mets will be using two players, Delgado and Sexson, who only play one position, hurting their flexibility.

Furthermore, if Delgado needs a day off, who would you rather have play first base ? A young prospect, with potential, Nick Evans ? A currently very hot with the bat, veteran, already established in New York, with the Mets, Damion Easley ? or Fernando Tatis ?

Or, would you rather “roll the dice” with Richie Sexson ?

Sexson has some value, but, I would rather give 1B opportunities to Evans, Easley or Tatis.

He actually played some outfield earlier in his career, so he wouldn't be completely useless as a bench player. Plus, the dude's a pretty decent lefty masher.

Evans isn't ready, Easley shouldn't be any more than a defensive replacement at first and Tatis will come back to earth eventually.

Considering they can pick him up basically for free, he wouldn't be a bad option. Really, anyone who takes ABs away from Marlon Anderson is a good move in my book.

It will be interesting to see if Sexson receives an opportunity to be a starting first baseman.

If he doesn't, opportunities to platoon at 1B, may be his only option, then, he might want to sign with the Mets.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Sexson over the next week or two. I would be surprised if the Mets are not looking at him.
