Going to Shea

The ominous clouds appear in the west as Jobu packs up his wife and car to make the yearly pilgrimage to the big blue stadium of Shea in Flushing, Queens. The ride was uneventful as we drove through what was sure to be a big storm that would delay the start of the game. Thankfully as we hit the stadium with the NEW CitiField rising in the old parking lot, Shea was a-glow in sunshine, the humidity was low, it was a perfect night for baseball and we knew that the game would start on time!!

Usually Jobu likes to tailgate big time. However, with the weather a question mark and having to work during the day, grilling would have to wait (look me up during football season…and we will go to town). Subway sandwiches were the order of the evening. Listening to the pre-game with Eddie C. on the flagship station WFAN while chowing down is great. The scene was set for an exciting game to start the series with the Florida Marlins.

As we enter the stadium, the grounds crew is putting the finishing touches on the field. By the way, how many guys does it take to water the field? It takes 7. 1 to spray the water, and 6 to hold the hose (insert your own joke here).

As the game started I couldn’t think of a place I’d rather be on a Friday night. Ollie P had a 1-2-3 top of the first and after a slight scare in the second; he settled down for the night and threw 120 pitches, struck out 8, walked 1 and let up 2 hits through 7 innings. In the bottom of the first, Daniel Murphy singled (this kid looks good and has great concentration at the plate) and on an 0-2 count David Wright hit his second 2 run, home run in as many days. Carlos Delgado added an insurance home run in the home 4th to keep the fish at bay. The Mets won 3-0 and moved closer to the top (1 game behind the Phillies) as they leaped over Florida and the Pirates beat the Phillies.

Some random observations: It was great to see Long Island Met Fan at the game and touch base with him. Carlos Beltran continues to haul in all that is hit his way in Center Field. At the plate he still looks like he is pressing. If every one keeps the status quo (Reyes, Wright, Delgado, and Tatis) and Beltran can get on a tear, WATCH OUT!!! They may be able to overtake Philadelphia and put some distance between them and the rest of the division. The pitching needs to hold up and the injuries need to heal. This will be the team that goes to war in September and October.

LET’S GO METS!!!

I hate to admit it, I'm gonna miss that place.

But has it always been SheaStadium? If it's CitiField, then wouldn't it make sense that it's SheaStadium? Or is it Citi Field just like it's Shea Stadium?

Whichever, glad you had a good time at the game (and that they won!) Now if "we" can just get that First Place spot and lead back!!!!
