What’s going on? Before the All-star break, the NY Mets were a juggernaut. They were a freight train picking up steam. They were relaxed and played with a care free attitude and they were WINNING ball games. Can you say 10 game winning streak.
What a difference a couple of weeks make.
Jobu feels that the bullpen is over worked, the offense is pressing (i.e. Wright & Beltran) and there is no help in the foreseeable future (see no trades). You can bring up all the rooks you want from the farm, but they are expected to contribute and that is a lot of pressure for some young kids who are playing in “the show” in NYC. The Mets need to wean these young turks and bring them along slowly. The major issue is obvious, the injury bug is very, very bad in Met land and the kids are under pressure.
If Carlos Delgado and Fernando Tatis can stay steady and David Wright and Carlos Beltran can find their swings, then the Mets will be OK. Jose Reyes needs to be Jose Reyes. When all this happens, it takes the burden off the rest of the club which relaxes all and they will play better.
Jerry Manuel has to let his starters pitch a little longer into the game and not leave it up to the pen. The bullpen has been abysmal and is in trouble. Blowing saves and games like there is no tomorrow. Maybe a meeting with the pitching staff is what Jerry should have.
Thank goodness that Monday 8/4 is an off day. I say re-group, rest up and maybe a 7 game home stand is what this team needs. I love home cooking. LET’S GO METS!!!!
