This Is No Interim Leader

Will the Mets drop the “interim” title from Jerry Manuel's position? If so, when?

I will be the first to admit that though I thought Manuel would be an improvement over Willie Randolph, I didn't expect such results. I have lobbied for Wally Backman, because I believe he will make a fine major league manager, but Jerry has not only opened my eyes, the eyes of Mets fans, but the eyes of all New Yorkers.

Jerry has infused this team with a sense of loyalty to one another, camaraderie, and a true sense of teamwork. Last year where it was apparent that the team was going through the motions, this years team is fighting. They are picking one another up; if one doesn't get the job done, someone else will. The fielding on this team has been outstanding for over a month, and the hitting is finally starting to gel. David Wright looks like he is finding himself, after being in a dreadful slump. Jose Reyes, who got off to a slow start this September looks as if he is finding his way out...and the Carlos'? Nothing short of outstanding.

Damion Easley has made Luis Castillo the forgotten soul. It isn't remembered that Fernando Tatis is actually a 3B, not a LF.

All this has been accomplished by a manager who has instilled a brotherhood amongst his players, has led by example, has been quick to not only get in an umpires face, but in the face of a player who needs an attitude adjustment. He has the uncanny ability to do this, while being the first one to give his boys a pat on the back for a key hit, or if they run into hard luck. Part friend, part father.

It is time to drop the “interim” prefix to Manuel's title. Make him Mets manager.
