We here at 24 Hours From Suicide...A Day In The Life Of A Met Fan send out our thoughts and prayers to those communities and families affected by Hurricane Ike this weekend. Thankfully Ike has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but there is still much healing that needs to take place in Louisiana and Texas.
Sports has always been a nice get-away from life's disappointments and tragedies, and this is no different.
After the devastation of September 11, 2001 - it was a breath of fresh air to finally watch a baseball game again. On September 21, 2001, ten days after the greatest shock of my life, it was wonderful to finally watch a baseball game. Not to mention the huge home run Mike Piazza hit against the dreaded Braves.
During World War II, Franklin Roosevelt persuaded Major League Baseball to continue playing so that the people of this country would have a release from the thoughts of war.
This is no different. The communities of Texas might not yet be ready for baseball, and their beliefs are respected. But hopefully, they will be able to flip on the TV and catch an Astros game, a football game, something to assist in the healing. Especially with how hot the Astros have been, what better way to take time out from your worries than to watch your team play?
For a poignant in depth article on this, I urge you to read Richard Justice's article in the Houston Chronicle.
To all those people affected by this tragedy, you are in our prayers.
