Yesterday an arrest warrant was issued for Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos. The warrant is for his arrest for charges stemming from the death of two women who were killed allegedly the Hummer driven by Burgos.
Burgos is suspected of leaving the scene where the victims were hit and killed. According to Prosecutor Raul Quiroz these are, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison.
"We recommend that Mr. Burgos turn himself in so we can start the judicial process," Quiroz said.
As you might have read Here, Burgos' SUV struck pedestrians Josefina Minaya Martinez, 38, and Angely Fana, 29, on Tuesday in the town of Nagua, north of the Dominican capital, according to police. The victims later died at a hospital.
Witnesses told police that Burgos was the driver, even though his cousin Edwin Silvestre Sanchez claimed to be behind the wheel.
“Quiroz said Burgos was recently arrested on an unrelated charge of illegal weapon possession, and released after posting a US$3,000 bond. “
Last month in New York Burgos was arrested on assault and harassment charges after he allegedly threw his girlfriend to the ground.
Burgos, 24, has not had a big league appearance in the major leagues since last year, and spent the past season on the disabled list following ligament replacement surgery on his pitching elbow.
