Turn Back The Clock

With the end of DST (Daylight Savings Time) set for 2:00 AM Sunday morning (November 2) I have decided not to turn my clock back one hour, but 22 years to 1986.

Ah, what happier times they were. The Phillies weren't in the position they are in now. No, no, no - they finished a distant second - 21.5 games behind the first place Mets.

The Mets finished with 108-54 record. The Best in baseball before having the season culminate with a World Series Title.

The Mets cruised through the regular season, before being challenged mightily by the likes of Billy Hatcher, Billy Doran, Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, Charlie Kerfeld and the remaining Houston Astros. The Mets defeated the Astros in six games. The final being a 16 inning marathon that saw multiple lead changes. Many forget that the Mets battled back from three runs down in the ninth to tie the game, and thus sending it into extra innings. The Mets went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 14th before Houston tied the score in the bottom of the 14th. The Mets put up three runs in the 16th to take the lead 7-4. The Astros came right back with two runs before running out of gas, and Mets went on to the World Series with a 7-6 16 inning victory.

We all know how the Mets went on to win the World Series; fighting back from a two game to none deficit; a three game to two deficit, and that eternal spine-tingling 10th inning game six win. Oh yes, and game seven...Ray Knight, Al Nipper, Darryl Strawberry, Marty Barrett, Jesse Orosco...the World Championship

So come on Mets fans, lets turn back the clocks before bed tonight. Not one hour, but 22 years to that dream season of 1986.
