Wright's Right

David Wright, when interviewed at his 'Do The Wright Thing' gala, had the following to say about the Mets situation: "You go through two seasons that we've been through the last couple years and you're going to need a little bit of a face-lift. There's 30 teams out there that can use pitching, and obviously we're one of them."

When talking about he bull-pen, Wright said the following about Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez, "I think the numbers speak for themselves. But he's a guy that can throw two or three pitches in any count..."

Wright didn't undermine Brian Fuentes either, saying, "I think Fuentes is right up there in the same caliber."

Wright stands behind GM Omar Minaya. He attests that Omar is always working the phones to try and make the Mets a better club. About Minaya he says, "...hardest-working GMs in baseball."

"And I can vouch for that," Wright said. "Because I'm at dinner with him sometimes and his phone's ringing off the hook."

Wright, ever the company man, is always willing to make a call to sell a free agent on the merits of NY and the Mets. "I live here most of the offseason," Wright said, "so if the organization wants me to be a tour guide or make a phone call, I'll be more than happy to."

Even though Wright wasn't quoted as saying anything about the "everyday" player, the Mets need to seriously look at 2B, Catcher, and LF. They need to decide do they want a veteran (ala Garrett Anderson) or use the platoon system of Murphy and Tatis. Orlando Hudson would be sweet in Flushing, and I personally hope the Mets make a play for him.

Hang in there, free agency starts midnight tonight. Let's hope the Mets make smart decisions about the club instead of looking for the "big name." I don't think they should go after K-Rod. They might be able to fill that role with a less sexy name.

Stay tuned, now the fun begins...
