Mets Could Have Had A Marquis Player

As reported by Dan Graziano - Star Ledger, the Mets turned down a trade of Aaron Heilman for Jason Marquis. The Cubs were willing to pick up a portion of Marquis' $9.875M contract.

Graziano says the Mets declined because they didn't believe Marquis was any better than any of the pitchers they have, and that they might try and use Heilman in a bigger deal.

Are the Mets over-valuating Heilman? Maybe. I'm not a huge Marquis fan, but he has averaged 13 wins per year. Are the Mets holding onto Heilman for a bigger deal? If so, I would think it would have to be a package deal. Heilman straight-up will not net much for the Mets.

Could the Mets actually be considering moving Heilman to the starting rotation as he (Heilman) has requested? Extremely doubtful.

Graziano also thinks the Mets are giving too much credit to their club - thinking they only need one starting pitcher (Jon Garland?) and some relief help. Graziano correctly asks these questions: Is Ryan Church going to be OK? Castillo? Will the platoon of Murphy/Tatis work all season? Is there bench deep enough?

What about Marlon Anderson? He had a poor 2008. Was it just a bad year, or the beginning of the end?

Many questions. Some hopefully will be answered by the conclusion of the Winter Meetings, which commence tomorrow at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
