Pedro Martinez – Was he worth the 53 million?

If you ask Bob Klapisch the answer is a resounding no.

If you check out his latest article he even says that Pedro really didn’t do much in regards to bring players to the Mets. He mentions that the money the Mets offered Beltran is the reason he is a Met and had nothing to do with Pedro.

Of course the money was a factor I am sure but I doubt Beltran would have signed if he didn’t see the Mets were on the way to make the team more respectable. I think Pedro’s first year with the Mets where he was 15-8 really was what the Mets brass expected but after that it was all down hill. Of course looking back on it now you really wanted a bit more out of him but at his age what did people expect?
