Bobby Abreu a fit for the Mets?

Even though his defense is not up to snuff the NY Post thinks Bobby Abreu is a good fit for the Mets. You can read the story here. I do not disagree for 1 year.

The keys to this are the fact that he could hit lefties which he did last year batting .315. He has a good on base percentage. Where would you play him? I would say left field have Tatis be the 4th outfielder and send back Daniel Murphy to triple AAA . Murphy did well but he could use time to work on fielding and lets give him more work at maybe 2nd base. Of course he is not great in the outfield but no one is going to be that good in Citi Field in its first year.

Abreu last year made 16 million and of course by now he knows he will not make that in 2009. If the Mets can get him for 7-10M he would still fit in the budget for the Wilpons in 2009. Adam Rubin does a good job calculating the Mets payroll for 2009 which you can check out here. In it he reflects Ollie signing on for 14M . That gives the Mets a payroll around 135M before you count what Freddy Garcia might make.

That leaves the Mets room to sign Abreu . For the Mets to sign Manny they would have to shed payroll to stay under the luxury cap of 162M .

By the way Brian Schneider is making 4.9M? please....
