Larry Chipper Jones is a kinder, gentler rival of the Mets. As you may recall, Larry has drawn the ire of Mets fans for over a decade, with clutch play and a big mouth.
As were reported here, 24 Hours...-January 4, 2009, Larry wasn’t too pleased with the trash talking going on between the Mets and Phillies over the last two years, nor the acquisition of JJ Putz and Francisco Rodriguez, and had the following to say:
He claimed, “The rich get richer. It's becoming more and more apparent that the bigger markets are crushing the smaller markets with these signings. From a Mets standpoint, they've had a running feud with the Phillies the past couple of years. It's kind of weird not to be in it.”
He went on to say, “The Mets picked up the two best closers in the American League West for their bullpen, and they're basically making it a seven-inning game. You'd better be winning the game after seven innings. If you're not, you're pretty much done.”
Now Larry is quoted as saying, "You go out and get two top closers, you're going to address a serious problem they thought they had last year. They did it in a big way. We, as the Braves and Phillies, have to concentrate on winning the game in the first seven innings so we don't have to worry about the eighth and ninth." He didn’t sound as angry as he did back on January 4th.
Larry also enlightened us that he is 'President of the David Wright Fan Club' saying, “I'm a huge David Wright fan. How could you not want to sit back and see how David Wright goes about his business, how he mentally prepares for games? David Wright is the best third baseman in the National League, if not all of baseball."
This is the same guy who was complaining when Wright won the Gold Glove in 2007: "I wouldn't have been disappointed had someone like Feliz or Ramirez won it. I'm a little confused by the final tally - that's a head-scratcher ...
