Heir Apparent?

Last year the Mets former #1 draft pick, Eddie Kunz received a rude awakening to the pros. Forced into the major leagues from AA due to a season ending injury to Billy Wagner, and the ineptitude of Luis Ayala, Aaron Heilman, and others, Kunz wasn't given as much work as he needed, and at times was over-matched.

Kunz, the 6'6” - 22 year old righthander compiled an abysmal 13.50 ERA in four appearances. In all fairness to Kunz, General Manuel didn't use him wisely; too often he went days without seeing action. Somewhat understandable since the Mets were in a pennant race.

With the bumps and bruises that came after saving 27 games with AA Binghamton, Kunz is keeping an open mind and positive attitude for the 2009 season. Although he is more than likely headed to AAA Buffalo this season, Kunz says, “That’s the one thing that drives me right now.”

Dan Warthen believes in Kunz, but cautions that he still needs to learn, and he must show better command of his pitches in regard to control. “He still has some maturing to do, pitching-wise,” Warthen said. “Because we were in desperate need last year, he got promoted to the major leagues, maybe before he should have.”

Added Kunz, “When they brought me up, it was really just like a tester for me. Just to get up there, get a feel for things, a feel for Shea, and a feel for big-league life. Now I know what I have to do.”

Warthen summed up the belief he has in Kunz' late inning ability by stating, “and hopefully a closer somewhere down the line after Frankie leaves us, if he ever does. Eddie Kunz is like an heir apparent.”

Some nice words from the Mets pitching coach. If Warthen's belief in Kunz' ability is accurate, the Mets future might be brighter than many of the pundits have expressed over the years.
