The Mets have signed veteran 2B Junior Spivey to a Minor League contract. Spivey, 34, spent time in the Majors with Arizona, Milwaukee, and Washington – between 2001 and 2005. Spivey will join Alex Cora and Fernando Tatis as reserve infielders.
The Mets are still claiming they are not interested in Pedro Martinez. For all the hype Pedro has received for his performance in the WBC, people are missing a huge point; Pedro was dominant against…the Netherlands. Yes the Netherlands had a nice run, but they were no offensive powerhouse. They scored six runs in four games against the Dominican Republic (2) and Puerto Rico (2) - certainly not murderers row.
The Mets are in the process of returning their RuleV pick, Rocky Cherry, to the Baltimore Orioles. Cherry was placed on waivers on Friday. If a team does not claim him, he must be offered back to the Orioles for $25K. If the Orioles refuse to pay the $25K, the Mets will be allowed to retain his rights, and send him to AAA. Being a RuleV player, he must remain on the roster for the entire year, unless he is waived, and goes unclaimed. For more on RuleV regulations, read here.
