Manuel Might Face Suspension

Jerry Manuel might face suspension for "bumping" first base umpire Bill Welke while arguing an interference call against Jose Reyes during a run-down of Shane Victorino, during the Mets 7-5 victory over the Phillies last night.

Reyes was called for interference whey it appeared that Victorino threw a shoulder at Reyes to block him. Victorino was awarded second base, then the fireworks began. General Manuel came charging out of the dugout to confront Welke, and according to Manuel, wanted him (Welke) to confer with the other umpires. Welke refused, telling Manuel it was his call, and he was in position.

Manuel continued his argument, and was promptly ejected by Welke. Manuel continued to argue, and got in Welke's face. It seems that Manuel's cap, the brim, touched Welke.

Of the play, Welke said, "He can't be there when Victorino makes that turn. He's got to get out of the way. That was the reason for the obstruction call. Jerry wanted me to get help on the play, but ... I moved into position to take that end of the rundown. It was my call, and there was no reason to ask for help."

According to crew chief and brother, Tim Welke said they were not ready to disclose if any disciplinary action would be sought against Manuel.

Thankfully the call, nor Manuel's ejection came back to bite the Mets. With Victorino on second, Jayson Werth hit a 2 run shot off of Pedro Feliciano to make the score 7-5.

Having seen the replay, it was a questionable call. Clearly Victorino threw an elbow into Reyes, and we don't know if Welke did see it that way.

The Mets are playing better of late, and it is nice to see some fire from the manager, and see how his player's react. Wright, Beltran, and Reyes - yes, the "Core" - all went yard. It was nice to see the Mets close out two series in a row, beat division rivals, and put together a winning streak.
