With the Mets celebrating on Saturday the Mets 40 year anniversary of the 1969 championship Adam Rubin has a nice piece on a player that you don’t hear much from that being Nolan Ryan . To read the piece check it out here
Some points of interest. Ryan mentions about being traded to the Angels .
"I went to a club that was rebuilding, trying to develop pitchers and they knew they had to give me innings and they did," he said. "The fact that I had control issues anyway early in my career, pitching on a regular basis was probably something I needed and wasn't able to get during my time with the Mets."
“The Angels told him, and I don't know it word for word, but the ball is going to be in your shoe every turn, we don't care if you're 0-30. That's what he needed." As per Tom Seaver.
The Mets made some awful trades back then. They let go Amos Otis and of course the trading of Seaver later in the 70’s was insane . Ryan was never much more then a .500 pitcher in his career but it would have been nice to maybe have him pitch next to Seaver and Koosman and Matlack during the Mets lean years of the mid to late 70’s
