Refusing To Let The Present Tarnish The Past

Former Mets Lefty, Jerry Koosman has been sentenced to six months in prison for tax evasion.

We have chronicled Kooz quite a few times (see below), but have neglected to post any news about his tax evasion problems until now. My reason was due to allowing the process to be carried out. Honestly I didn’t do it with Ambiorix Burgos, but vehicular manslaughter/murder is a far cry from tax evasion, plus, admittedly, it’s difficult to write when it was someone I was so fond of as a youngster growing up in the 70’s. My bad.

I remember seeing him on TV watching the 1969 40th Anniversary celebration back in August, and it was difficult to imagine him in trouble with the IRS.

Koosman pleaded guilty in May to a misdemeanor for tax evasion in 2002. He was accused of not paying taxes 2002 – 2004. Koosman claimed he had researched the law, and thought it only applied to Federal workers. Koosman neglected to pay taxes on income from card shows and appearances.

Koosman, who is my favorite Mets pitcher (along with Turk Wendell), made some poor choices, and it is a shame that he did so. He must pay his debt, but the little boy in me wishes he made more sound choices.

It is believed by neither disclosing nor filing taxes, he cost the government as much as $90,000.

When I choose to think of Kooz, it will be wearing a Mets uniform, and not prison stripes.

Some articles we’ve scribed of Koosman:
