Start Of A Trend?

Today Newsday announced that starting next Wednesday, October 28, 2009, they will start charging websurfers a fee for reading Newsday on line.

Neil Best - Watchdog explains that Newsday subscribers and Cablevision customers with Optimum Online will not have to pay. Those who are subscribers of neither will be charged.

According to the Newsday article, people will have to“pay a $5 weekly fee. However, nonpaying customers will have access to some of newsday.com's information, including the home page, school closings, weather, obituaries, classified and entertainment listings. There also will be some limited access to Newsday stories.”

Calling it a “Pioneering Web Model”, Debby Krenek, Newsday managing editor and senior vice president/digital said, "We are excited about this model because in addition to a unique ability to immediately reach about 75 percent of Long Island households, we believe the hyper-local approach is right for Long Island.”

Maybe down the road, the NY Times, Daily News, and Newsday will all be pay services, and they can combine their subscriptions into one lump sum and call the product Bag Of Rags…or has that already been taken?
