The Mets completed a weekend sweep of the Astros today to finish the season 70-92. Imagine if these wins were in 2007 and 2008? The Mets would have made the play-offs. This year, it just prevented the Mets from losing 95 games.
A metsfan73 hat tip goes to Nelson Figueroa and Josh Thole. Figueroa pitched well today, who went nine innings allowing only four hits and no runs in a Mets 4-0 victory.
The future might be bright with young catcher Josh Thole, who went 3-4 today, finishing with a season average of .321. The kid has made tremendous progress, and if he continues to develop as he has thusfar, he might be a viable catcher for years to come.
This year hurt, but I like to look at it that we were able to see some players of tomorrow: many were disappointing, but Josh Thole makes me believe the kid might do well. Daniel Murphy finished well too.
Angel Pagan has shown a decent plate approach, but is severely lacking in common sense, between being picked off base constantly, poor base-running decisions, and poor judgement in the field.
According to the Wilpon's, they plan on spending and looking to make the Mets a contender in 2010. I'm not holding my breath, are you?
The next big days ahead for the Mets are, in no particular order, rooting against the Phillies, the GM meetings, and the opening of the free agency period.
2009 hurt, and it will take some time to get over the hurt, especially after such terrible endings in 2006, 2007, and 2008, but we also must be realistic. If you expect the Mets to go from 92 losses to 92 wins in one year, you are sadly mistaken. This team needs to learn, other than winning more frequently, how to beat their rivals, and how to put the final nail in the coffin. Too many times over the last four years, they have not had the killer instinct, and because of this, have snatched too many defeats from the jaws of victory.
So Mets fans, lets take a little breather, lick our wounds, regroup, and get ready for 2010, which should be better than 2009. Just don't expect to win 90+ games. They will need time to get back to respectability, and patience may be our best ally.

So sign Nelson Figueroa for 2010. Since he became part of the rotation on August 25th, he started 8 games: 50.1 innings, 3.22 ERA, 44 strikeouts, 16 walks, 2-6 record (little run support). Take away his Sept. 17th start against Atlanta, and he pitched 45.1 innings, striking out 40, walking 15, 2.38 ERA, 2-5 record. What are the Mets waiting for? After the World Series ends, he becomes a free agent. It's no secret he wants to pitch for the Mets in 2010 and beyond. Omar, Fred/Jeff: What are you waiting for?
