Mike Pelfrey Talks To Boomer & Carton

Great radio this morning. WFAN's Boomer & Carton just had Mets #2 starter Mike "Big Pelf" Pelfrey on.

Pelfrey had a great sense of humor, especially after all the abuse he has taken with the scores of parodies the morning show has done on Big Pelf's mannerisms (licking, balking, etc.).

Carton had asked Pelf if he had heard any of the parodies, and Pelf said he hadn't heard them, but "heard of them." They got on him good-naturedly because Beltran and other's have said they would play them in the clubhouse.

When asked what or if his teammates said anything about the incessant licking he does while pitching, he said they get on him good, because "they gotta."

Pelfrey said he feels great after losing 20 pounds this off-season. He lost the weight by "eating right." He was at his heaviest last year, with a playing weight of 250 lbs.

Right away Big Pelf was asked if he knew of Beltran's surgery, and he said he didn't know of it until he read on line late last night or this mornin
g.

About Rick Peterson:

Pelfrey said he “doesn’t miss” former Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson. When asked, he emphatically said “NO” when asked if he missed Peterson.

He loves Dan Warthen because he and Pelfrey share the same philosophy. With Peterson, Pelf didn’t share the same Philosophy. Warthen has the pitchers pitching to their strength, where Peterson was big on having pitchers pitch his way, not to their strength.

John Maine is Pelf's best friend on the team, and they played Rock Band together and sang Bon Jovi 's Living On A Prayer when the Mets were having another outing with youngsters. At the end of the interview, Pelf sang Living On A Prayer. About Gil Hodges Memorial Park:

Loves pitching in the new park. The fact that it’s so large makes it comfortable to pitch in. He said Wrightbusted his chops about how many HR’s he gave up in the park, and Pelf went right back at him saying opponents don’t seem to have difficulty hitting the ball out, so why do you. Classic!

Pelfrey surrendered the first HR in GHMP, and said that he “got it out of the way quick.”

Possibly the funniest thing said was wh
en Pelf said he heard Carton walked across the Brooklyn Bridge in a Speedo last week, he said that Rick Peterson used to sit around the pool (while on the road) wearing a Speedo and reading a book. Pelf remarked that it was "not the prettiest of sights."

Happy 26th birthday to Pelfrey.
