Possible Mets Trade

The Mets are looking to trade for Gary Matthews, Jr of the Angels. This tid bit comes from “an American League source.”

The Angels are said to have been interested in Brian Stokes, but have also been looking in the Mets minor league system.

Matthews is owed $23M over the next two years. The Angels would pick up a good portion of that salary. He would also garner another $5ooK for being traded mid contract.

I can’t imagine the Mets taking on such a large salary without sending Castillo out west. Castillo’s name isn’t mentioned, but that would be a lot of money, regardless of what the Angels pick up, for the Mets while still holding onto Castillo.

The Mets are interested in Matthews, Jr. because they are concerned about Beltran’s knee, and that he will most likely be out of the Mets line-up until May. There is no guarantee how long it will take him to get back to the “Old Carlos”, or if he ever will.

Matthews was with the Mets briefly in 2002, appearing in only two games.
