Reports Mets Almost Landed Piniero...Fact or Fiction

Mark Hale in today's NY Post reports that Joel Pineiro was very close to signing with the Mets this off season.

According to Pineiro, “They showed interest. They showed everything. But it came down to talking with the kids and the family and it was a tough decision to make.

“The Dodgers were in there, there were a couple teams in there. Houston. It was just a matter of coming down to the end and just feeling comfortable.”

Pineiro's agent, Adam Katz, said that the Mets and Angels were the finalists in the pitchers decision making process. Anaheim won out, paying the pitcher $16M for two years.

Mets reserve infielder Alex Cora, who is a neighbor of Pineiro, campaigned to have the righty move to Flushing. He tried selling Pineiro on the Mets (if that doesn't tell how difficult a sell the Mets are...), but ultimately, the Angels were a little more aggressive in their pursuit.

“[The Mets] were there from the beginning. But at the last go, I guess, Anaheim was the one guy that said all right, let’s go to work.”

As usual, a day late and a dollar short. Wonder if the Mets are kicking themselves - with the way Maine has pitched and with the constant uncertainty of OP. Do you really think the Mets would change anything if they had it to do all over again? Do we really think the Mets were in the running or a real consideration for Pineiro? Sadly, I don't think so.
