Mets Call Up Third Catcher In The Nickeas Of Time

Mets called up Catcher Mike Nickeas this morning. Nickeas was acquired from the Texas Rangers for Victor Diaz in August 2006.

Nickeas has spent time this year with Binghamton (AA) and Buffalo (AAA). He has hit, between both stops, .276 with 5 HR's and 33 RBI in 293 AB's. Most of his time was spent in Binghamton. He only played 7 games with Buffalo.

Nickeas has been considered Major League Ready for his defensive skills, and
he himself said:

"...I feel very comfortable defensively. The offense is always what I’ve been told has held me back.”

With Thole and Blanco handling the catching duties, it is doubtful Nickeas will see much action. At 27 years old, chances of him playing much are slim. Then again, all you need is an injury, and the tides can change.
