The Mets will most assuredly either look to sign to a multi-year deal or offer arbitration to Dickey, Pagan, and Pelfrey.
As my esteemed colleague scribed yesterday, chances of Non-Tendering Maine is high, while Sean Green is still on the bubble. Personally, I agree with longislandmetfan, and the Mets should Non-Tender both Green and Maine.
Sean Green has been useless since the Mets acquired him in that block buster trade of 2008 where the Mets traded Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Joe Smith and Jason Vargas for Green, JJ Putz, and Jeremy Reed.
In his Mets career, Green is a less than mediocre 1-4 with a 4.44 ERA and a WHIP of 1.456. What might save Green is the dearth of relief pitching, but I wouldn't risk bringing him back.
In 2006 and 2007 John Maine was an asset to this team. Starting in 2008, Maine started experiencing problems on the mound, and then with injuries. Maine proved to be difficult to work with while he was injured; there were times he was less than honest with how severe his injury/injuries were, that Dan Warthen had said that Maine (possibly mockingly): “is a habitual liar in a lot of ways as far as his own health.”
I agree that Maine needs to be Non-Tendered, but I can't help but think back to how well he pitched in Game 6 of the 2006 NLCS and how he pitched almost perfectly in the 161st game in 2007 when the Mets were in dire need of a quality start. Unfortunately, the SS Maine has sailed, and it is time for the Mets to waive good-bye.
