Will the media and fans lay off Johan Santana ? If every Met was performing as well as Johan, they would be a first place team. What do you expect from this guy ? 14-0 with an E.R.A. of 0.00 ?
Johan's been solid. He's 7-4 and with better support from the bullpen (yesterday, being a perfect example) he would have more wins, fewer losses, and his win/loss percentage would be better. Wins and losses are more of a team stat, because Johan can't catch his own pitches, play all 9 positions in the field, or be the only hitter in the lineup. It takes a team effort for a pitcher to be credited with a win, so don't look at 7-4 to judge how he's pitched, look at his stats.
Johan leads all Mets' starters (this will be a trend) with 94 and 2/3 innings pitched (Maine has 75, and Pelfrey 70), in 14 starts, averaging 6.76 innings per start, best of all Mets' starters (Pelfrey is 2nd averaging 5.83 innings per start). He's allowed 24 walks, least of all Met starters (Pelfrey has walked 30, Maine 34, and Perez 45 - Pedro has not pitched enough to be accurately compared), and has a team leading 86 strikeouts (Maine has 65, and Perez 55). Johan's E.R.A. is 2.85, also leading all Mets' starters (Maine is second with a 3.60 ERA).
If you follow Johan's career, when he was with Minnesota, he was known for improving when the weather got hot, and hurricane season began, on June 1st, each season. Here's Johan's stats since June 1st...
3 starts, 20 and 2/3 innings pitched (average of 6.88 I.P./start), 16 hits, ZERO homers (after allowing 12 in his prior 11 starts), 7 walks, and 21 strikeouts, with an earned run average of...
ARE YOU READY ??? 0.87 (only allowing 2 earned runs)
Johan's clearly not the problem. Root for rain, and Johan pitching every 5th day, regardless of rain outs, and off days. Johan's the man...
