Instead of watching Giuseppe Franco commercials, as well as Ron Darling plugging Sovereign Bank, I watched the Marlins vs. Phillies game as my backup channel, during Mets' commercial breaks. This game was a beauty. Young, talented, lefty, Cole Hamels pitched a brilliant game for Philly, going 8 innings, walking one, striking out 13, allowing two runs on three hits. The Marlins countered with young, talented, lefty, Andrew Miller (acquired from Detroit, in the looking worse and worse, for Detroit, acquisition of Miguel Cabrera & Dontrelle Willis) who pitched 7 stellar (as the great Joe Beningo would say) innings, allowing 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts. Both pitchers had a no-decision as the game was decided on a Dan Uggla walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, Marlins 6, Phillies 2.
Watching the Marlins game & the Mets game had me thinking. Hey, Omar !!! Who's our Cole Hamels ? Who's our Andrew Miller ? Who's our young, talented, lefthanded strikeout pitcher that the fan base can get excited about, and rally around ? Stop getting excited over the marquee name free agents and potential trade acquisitions that have already had their best seasons wearing someone else's uniform. Sign the 50+ players you just drafted. As they fill in rosters of the numerous A ball teams, start promoting some of your A ball players to AA, some of your AA to AAA, and so forth. While it was nice to see 29 year old, former Marlin, Chris Aguila, get an opportunity last night, especially when he singled, after seeing his first pitch as a Met, I want to see more young talent show its potential. Pelfrey is showing improvement over his last 3 starts, Nick Evans had a first game he'll be describing to others, for decades. Keep building the farm system, so we can eventually see who the Mets have that could be as talented as Cole Hamels or Andrew Miller.
