Yesterday it was reported in numerous sources that Fernando Martinez might be the centerpiece in a trade between the White Sox and the Mets. The Mets would sent F-Mart and others to the ChiSox for OF Jermaine Dye and closer Bobby Jenks.
The Mets have denied these reports.
Meanwhile, in the Dominican Winter League, Martinez is playing real well, batting .323 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and a .382 on-base percentage in 28 games for Leones del Escogido. After two consecutive injury plagued seasons (2007, 2008), the Mets are looking forward to a breakout season in 2009.
His play this season in the Dominican Republic might have the Mets reconsidering how they approach their LF situation for this coming season. If Martinez continues to play like he has in the DWL, he might be looking at a mid - late summer call up to Flushing.
Many, including myself, have wondered if F-Mart is the next Alex Escobar; the Met prospect who was all hype, and no heart. I have to keep reminding myself to be patient; Martinez just turned 20 in October, so if he does make it to Gil Hodges Memorial Park, er, Citi Field in '09, he is still just a baseball baby, and has time to develop and improve.
